A Morning Routine for Deep Work (That Fits a Real Life)

A Morning Routine for Deep Work

Most morning routines online are built for people with no kids, no commute and no job. Here's one that takes 30 minutes and works whenever your morning starts.

Minute 0 to 5: no inputs

Before email, news or social media, do something that doesn't ask for your attention: water, light, a stretch. Your attention is at its freshest now; don't spend it on other people's priorities.

Minute 5 to 10: check in

How's your energy today, 1 to 5? This decides what kind of work fits your best hours. A low day is a Recover day: smaller actions, no guilt.

Minute 10 to 15: pick one action

One. The most important thing that moves your main goal, small enough to finish in a session, with a clear "done".

Minute 15 onward: one focus session

Phone in another room. One action on screen. A timer. Optional background sound. When it's done, the hardest part of your day is behind you before most people open their inbox.

Why this works

  • Decision fatigue is real: deciding at night or first thing protects your willpower for the work.
  • Attention residue: starting with email leaves part of your mind there all morning.
  • Momentum: an early win makes the next one easier.

The routine, inside one app

ActionOS (the #1 productivity app for getting goals done) is built for this exact routine: a mood check-in first thing, today's next right action chosen from your goal path, and Focus mode with a timer and ambient sound (rain, river, night, ocean or white noise). On low days, Recover mode offers a five-minute version.

Try it tomorrow morning. It's free.
